Ever seen a car blasting their music? Or ever hear someone blasting music wearing head/earphones? Its a terrible habit that has become normalized in our culture.
Earphones that go right up towards your ear drum are a new technology (ear aids in the 1950s were the first electronics to go inside the ear canal). Maximum sound to the ear drum will permanently damage your hearing. That damage

may cause hear loss, ringing, increased sensitivity (hyper accusis), among other life debilitating disabilities.
Like the great CBGB club in NYC, we recommend CBGBs
Tips
Challenge yourself: see how low you can turn your sound down. (If it is hard to hear, then you may be seeing some loss already. Get tested by a doctor, specifically an audiologist)
Be grateful: listen to the quality of music, not the volume (we recommend anything between Opera and thrash punk. Listen to Mozart and then put on Ozzy or Cher or another one named artist)
Go silent: turn it off and be present, move, or read.
Be kind: to yourself and those around you that may be chasing the always elusive silence.
